★ Folkmore Roles & Attributes ★

Skills: He's excellent at listening to the troubles of others, and excellent at breaking down those troubles to their concise parts to handle each of them one at a time. He's usually the voice of reason, though fair warning that reason could be morally dubious. If you're on some sort of personal quest he will also be able to help guide you through that. Though he will be the first to say he's not some kind of 'spirit animal' he's just a regular guy. Well, raven.
Canon Abilities: Only being able to cross between the waking world and the Dreaming at will. In most ways he is a common raven that talks like a human. In-game this will translate to being able to cross into and out of another character's dreams at will
Role: Familiar
Role Qualities/Attributes: He can turn into a human for only one hour a day, because he would otherwise stay a human all the time. If he is able to actually bond with a Legend or Myth, then that time limit will increase
Role Reasoning: The lack of clear-cut morals but still more emotionally stable than most of those around him

Option 2. Choose FOUR-FIVE of the following questions to answer and expand upon. You may choose a fifth question if you feel it is integral to your character's personality. Each answer has a 100-300 word requirement.

OPTION 2 QUESTIONS (PICK 4-5) 100-300 WORD LIMIT EACH:

What experience challenged your character's core beliefs? How did they handle this or change from it?
That would be the first time he was sent to watch Rose Walker. At first, he thought of her as a kid (despite the fact she was in her twenties and not a kid at all) that didn't deserve what was happening to her, and maybe that was still the case. But as time went on and she was bringing down the walls of individual dreams just by existing, then threatening to do the same to the entire rest of the Dreaming, itself, Mattew began to see how killing one 'kid' might turn out to be the most humane act when faced with a shitty situation.
  • What is the most important and defining relationship(s) in your character's life and why?
His most important relationship is with Dream, though that would be more difficult to see earlier on when he first seems to regard Lucienne as the 'boss'. But it's Dream who is the actual boss and even Matthew sees that pretty quick. It's hard to be Dream's friend and no one else certainly seems to want to. But maybe because Matthew is new to being Dream's raven that he doesn't ever have the kind of reverence that other dream-creatures seem to have for Dream. Matthew is pretty casual with him and refers to himself as 'your friend, Matthew' early on in the show. I'm of the opinion Matthew treated Dream as a friend because he felt like Dream needed a friend more than a king's subject.

  • What is a headcanon (or two) you feel strongly about and that you prefer playing your character with? How is this supported in canon and why do you think it benefits the character's story?
I would like for Matthew to have a human family (a wife and grown daughter) because he already speaks of Rose Walker as a 'kid' despite the fact that she is 21. He also seems to have a great deal of empathy towards her and I chose to believe that he already has a daughter that is close to that same age. Also in the comics, Matthew Cable was married so It really isn't a big leap to assume that he has a family. Building on this head canon I am going to also assume that he does go go back to watch his family on occasion. Not to interfere with them but just to see how they are getting along. My head cnnon is that he has some of his own issues with how they became estranged in the first place. He even says in the show that he wasn't the best person when he was alive. In my mind he and his wife argued a lot over just about every little thing that came up. Eventually she took the young daughter away and raised her as a single parent. At the time, though he did miss his daughter he was too proud to make contact with his wife now that she was older. After his death he is concerned about unfinished business but how could he possibly make contact with them now as a raven?

  • What are your characters dreams and nightmares? Do you believe they are more likely to obtain one rather than the other?
Matthew lives and works among dreams and nightmares. But in the figurative sense, he would like to find his estranged family. Not to interfere with their lives but to be able to check on them again and make sure that they are alright. But he hadn't seen them lately in his human life and isn't sure how to do it in the first place. He knows that he won't have to do something awkward like trying to make small talk but just trying to get over the mental hurdle of seeing them again isn't something he's ready to deal with.  In the figurative sense his nightmare is something bad happening to them while Matthew would be helpless as a raven to do anything about it.
